Six High Schools Qualify for State LifeSmarts Competition

Students from six high schools from around Vermont showed just how consumer-savvy they are when they qualified for the first LifeSmarts competition to be held in Vermont.

The student teams are from Champlain Valley Union High School, Hinesburg; Green Mountain Technical Career Center, Hyde Park; Lamoille Union High School, Hyde Park; Winooski High School, Winooski; North Country Career Center, Newport; and Stafford Technical Center, Rutland. They competed online to achieve scores high enough to move on to the state competition to be held in the Pavilion Building in Montpelier on Feb. 12.

LifeSmarts, a program of the National Consumers League, is a consumer education competition that tests teens in grades 9-12 about personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities. The life skills learned by those participating in this competition will help them to become independent young adults.

The students will compete in a "game show" style competition that will determine a Vermont state winner. The Vermont winner will then travel, all expenses paid, to the national competition April 24-27 in Miami Beach, Florida. As this is the first time the competition has ever been held in Vermont, the team will be the first to represent Vermont in the national competition, now in its 16th year.

Special thanks to our major contributor, National Life Group, with additional contributions from VSECU; Grippin, Donlan & Roche, accountants; and Carol Jenkins.

Speakers Bureau

VT Jump$tart continues to work with teachers and groups interested in inviting a guest speaker to make a presentation on a financial topic. However, our Speakers Bureau has lost its volunteer coordinator, so we will try to field requests as best we can. We ask for your patience as try to fill specific requests.
